In regards to the newspaper and cloth. Yes, it would protect you from Alpha particles, but not Beta and Gamma. And should you be so close to the explosion that you need protection from Alpha particles, you would probably be dust very shortly after.

So i suppose the fact that they bombed pearl harbor was just an accident, kids learn really quickly that you never touch a hot stove, we weren't in the war until pearl harbor was hit, then we did what any parent would do to a child whos acting up, we said "stop it, RIGHT NOW".
Notice how quickly the war ended after we hit those targets?
Yes it was a bad thing to do, but in war, doing one bad thing is alot better than 20 bad things.Had we not bombed it,they would have bombed tokyo, mass raid.
