Youtube takes thumbnail from 25%, 50%, and 75% part of the video, so you can put the image at any point among those three. Its just that putting it at 50% is simpler. As for the black BG.. I'm out :P

That's the purpose of using a higher quality codec with the proper settings--sharper video quality. All vids get converted to flv by YouTube...but you can use diff formats and still get good results. I've seen .wmv vids set at (video) 320 x 240 px, 30 fps, 1m, and (audio) 128 at 44 hz come out looking pretty good. This video is just crisper because of his settings. Really nice.
