Politically speaking, when you are born in a certain country, that is your nationality. The nationality of your parents will also come into factor but if you are a black american, you are american. You are not african american. If you are white you are European-American. The original Americans are the aboriginals =).

That seems very suss. For one, does he have to wave his fingers in front of them as he asks the question? And would this trick work in a language where the verb "to stop" wouldn't be the same as the noun "stop" meaning station to get off at. And the "train" in "of thought" correspond with the "train" as in mode of transport.

Are you really not understanding why your logic is wrong. You're calling him AMERICAN when he is from ENGLAND. You could just call him British instead of feeling the need to comment on his color. Was it that important to let everyone know he was black?
