On The Map with Avi Lewis: Ayaan Hirsi Ali & Islamophobia

Enviado por: OnTheMapwithAviLewis
Informacoes do Video:
Avi's encounter with controversial author, politician and born-again America-booster, Ayaan Hirsi Ali who says there's no such thing as Islamophobia. Her extraordinary life story often eclipses the powerful role she is playing in the conversation about Islam and terrorism. As she herself said recently, "Right now the media are still lapping it up: a black woman who criticizes Islam."

crazyb, I disagree. He sounds like an extreme left wing anti-American twit, and by challenging this woman on issues she is intimately acquainted with, he looks stupid. And isn't he now employed by al-Jazeera? See most of the other recent postings, which I substantially agree with.

I don't think he sounds like an 'anti american' twit. Look at your government. People running for you presidency can't even admit that they believe in evolution with invoking God (to not lose votes). The american government has banned stem cell research. A science that could provide cures for many diseases (like cancer, diabetes, alzheimer's ,ect). this research has been put on hold by american polliticians due to religious beliefs regarding the 'soul'.

As far as his comments regarding Islam. Well, he is a jounalists and the question that he asked are ones that people would bring up anyway. He's just being fair to the issue. If you ever saw the program where he had Dawkins on you know that Avi is an atheist or at least agnostic. I never head of him being employed by Al-Jazeera. America has turned into a shit hole ever since Bush took power. This is the view of American 'out side' of America.

Also, Avi had a point about the elections regarding Bush. Bush seemed to weasel his way into power. That not good democracy (and many americans feel the same way). Also, when Ali sais the America is the best country. Sorry, I think thats wrong. America doesn't even have health care. American pay a shit load in taxed and don't even have health care (again, something many american speak about).

Hey, I think America has produced some great stuff in many areas (music, movies, science, ect). However, the country has fallen prey to some shit leaders, that lie and bullshit there way into power, and continue to do so, while in power. If you're an American you should know this. ANd I hope you do, because its pretty bad when a foreigner has to tell you.

I'm writing on a lab top (riding in a car),so sorry for all the spelling mistakes. And I wasn't trying to be rude to you or anything.
crazykb, I am ... ( 6 days ago by dhbushy)
crazykb, I am Canadian. And I am not a fan of GW Bush. However, I am a fan of Ayaan Ali, and I think Avi Lewis looked silly trying to challenge her on Islam. As to her statements on the US, I think that's partly a function of the US taking her in after the death threats, etc. levelled against her by the Islamists in the Netherlands. Read her book - "Infidel". As to Lewis, he's the son of a well known NDP hack, and I'm pretty sure he now works for al-Jazeera. Hey, you are entitled to your opinion.

I also like Ayaan ALi. However, that doesn't mean that I can't disagree with her. Again, the comments on Islam, as made by Avi, were valid. It also gave Ali a chance to speak about Islam. The whole point of being a reporter is to give all sides of an issue. Even reportes that believe in evolution have to ask the same lame questions when interviewing Dawkins since they are 'one the radar' for many people. I have watched much of Avi Lewis. I think he's quite a smart man.

That would be your opinion. My opinion - Lewis has a well known bias, and is editorializing, not reporting. I am curious - what do you disagree with her on - I am talking about islam specifically. Which of his comments about islam were valid, in your opinion?
I don't disagree ... ( 5 days ago by crazykb)
I don't disagree with her about anything regarding Islam. However, many people make the claim that only the extremists are the 'bad ones'. However, Ali states that the Quran itself is the problem. I agree. However, as I said, many people believe that the problem with Islam are the extremists NOT the Quran. Lewis was just playing 'devil's advocate' (what any journalist would do).I'm an atheist and feel that religion is a cancer to this planet, especially Islam.Ali's comments on the US were B.S.

This woman came from a very oppressive country. Anyone from Somalia is going to think the western world is a wonderful place by comparison.
Well crazykb, Ali ... ( 5 days ago by dhbushy)
Well crazykb, Ali is a courageous woman who took on the Islamists, so if she wants to spout a bit of pro-US rhetoric that's fine with me. Avi Lewis now works for al-Jazeera. That's all you need to know about his bias.
Avi lewis does work ... ( 5 days ago by crazykb)
Avi lewis does work for al-Jazeera (I checked), however that doesn't make him bias. I have seen good programs on Al-Jazeera (Dawkins, kaku, ect). And if you think that spewing rhetoric is fine, well you're being bias (and hypocritical). Ali is a great women, however again, that doesn't mean that I have to agree with everything she says. However, her views on Islam are spot on. The maltreatment of women by Islam (Burka, for example) makes me sick. What do you think of Irshad Manji?
It's great that we ... ( 5 days ago by dhbushy)
It's great that we can have civilized discussions about these subjects without fear of being whipped, stoned or beheaded. As I said, I am not a fan of GWB, but I do understand why she feels the way she does about the US. Irshad Manji is doing great work - I hope she stays vigilant, though, because the Islamists are a volatile bunch.

I love Ishard (I wish she wasn't lesbian, I love to date her). Anyway, as much as I think that she is intelligent, I can't understand why she stays a believer of Islam. If God wrote the quran, He/She/it must have known it would have led to all the bullshit that it has. I just don't know how she can remain religious. As a person, she is intelligent, intellectual and honest. I wonder if she makes hole in her pillows with that hair though?

Yes, there is a paradox there. I think she remains "Muslim" to avoid being Van Goghed - I guarantee she is not popular in the mosques. My opinion is the quran is the rantings of a lunatic.
"...is the quran is ... ( 5 days ago by crazykb)
"...is the quran is the rantings of a lunatic.". Or a really bad comedian. However, I think that she is a muslim for the same reason that all people are religious: a need to believe in something larger than they are. The only thing that I would treat as a God would be a 200 foot high pot plant (of high quality stuff). Now thats a 'God' that I could worship!
You should move to ... ( 5 days ago by dhbushy)
You should move to BC (if you aren't there now) and you may find that God. Personally I would prefer the 200 foot high keg, but to each their own. That's what makes Canada great!

I live in Toronto. However, I have been to BC. Its a great place. Lots of nature. Well, about the 'keg' I'm not a drinker. Anyway, nothing gets you thinking more than a big joint. Plus its great when playing music (or anything else). Oh, and Canada rules. Eh!

"Anyone from Somalia is going to think the western world is a wonderful place by comparison."
Because it kinda' is. Its only not "wonderful" to people who either grow up in it or are indoctrinated to view it as evil. What we westerners have is so much better than what any other society in the world (or in history) has ever had.
She made a very good point at the end: "You grew up in freedom, so you can spit on freedom because you don't know what it is to not have freedom."

she was exactly right! none of us will ever truly know what its like to live where we dont have freedom to do and live how we please. we are spoiled americans. we earned that right and fought for it, we fought for our freedom and that is when everyone in the wold wants to be apart of the. american dream and strive to achieve their goals here in america! Avi was so rude to say those thing to her, he is spoiled just like the rest of us.

I agree. I'd much rather live in the western world. It's totally interesting to see it from her POV, though. I've been thinking about it for days after seeing this video. There are good and bad things about every nation - though we shouldn't forget countries like Japan, which is very peaceful and modern but is not western.
